How does a Gonstead chiropractor analyze the spine?

A Gonstead chiropractor conducts a thorough analysis of your spine using five criteria to detect the presence of the vertebral subluxation complex.

  1. X-ray Analysis

X-ray films enable your doctor to visualize the entire structure of your spine. This is helpful in evaluating disc integrity and any disease processes, fracture, posture, joint, and disc integrity and vertebral misalignments.

  2. Instrumentation

The nervoscope is the instrumentation of choice for Gonstead chiropractors. The nervoscope detects uneven distributions of heat along the spine which can be indicative of inflammation and nerve pressure. This instrument is guided down the length of the back and feels like two fingers gliding down each side of your spine.

  3. Static Palpation

Static Palpation is a physical examination of the spine in a fixed, stationary position. Your chiropractor will feel for swelling and tenderness, and the presence of any abnormal texture or tightness in the muscles and other tissues of your back.

  4. Motion Palpation

Like static palpation, motion palpation is a physical examination of the spine, while the spine is moving and bending at various angles. This enables your chiropractor to determine how easily or difficult each segment of your spine moves in different directions.

  5. Visualization

Visualization is a way to cross reference all the other findings. Your chiropractor is an expert in looking for subtle changes in your posture and movement which could indicate any problems.

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete medical system that includes: acupuncture, Chinese herbs, tui na, nutrition, and exercise. Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world, originating in China more than 2,000 years ago. The National Institute of Health has researched and documented the effectiveness of acupuncture. Medical systems in the U.S. are currently integrating this medical practice into their healthcare and some insurance companies will cover acupuncture treatments.

TCM places emphasis on understanding and treating the underlying cause of each individual's imbalance. This holistic approach to health not only addresses physical complaints but also emotional, environmental, and lifestyle conditions.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the body at specific points shown to be effective in the treatment of specific health problems. These points have been mapped by Chinese acupuncturists over a period of three to five thousand years. Recently, electromagnetic research by Western scientists has confirmed the locations of acupuncture points. Throughout history, more people have been treated with acupuncture and Oriental medicine than all other health modalities combined. This medical system continues to help people across this country and the world.

How does acupuncture work?

TCM theory explains that an imbalance or a blockage of the energy (“Qi”) circulating through the body causes pain and diseases. Acupuncture allows Qi to flow to areas where it is deficient and away from areas where it is excessive. Acupuncture regulates and restores the harmonious energetic balance of the body.

About Chinese Herbs:

The majority of Chinese populations have used Chinese herbal medicine for thousands of years. Herbal medicine is still in common use worldwide today, because it provides patients with a higher quality of life. Herbs have been proven save and effective when administered correctly.

Chinese herbs are a powerful tool in the maintenance of health and the elimination of disease. The taste of the herbs may seem unusual at first to people. However, most people take only a short time to get used to it and it brings the benefits of continued good health.

How quickly do Chinese Herbs work?

The effects of Chinese herbs are frequently seen after several days of regular usage. Once the benefits are established, they often last for a long time. Chronic problems may require Chinese herbal treatments that last several months. The combination of Chinese herbal treatments with acupuncture treatments usually provides the most dramatic results.
